CHA Consulting’s Gallaudet University Microgrid Project Wins ABC Excellence in Construction Award

We are thrilled to share that CHA Consulting, Inc. (CHA), a valued tenant at the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center (VTCRC), has been honored with the prestigious 2024 Award of Excellence by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Excellence in Construction Awards program. This recognition celebrates CHA’s exceptional work on the Gallaudet University Microgrid Project, a landmark achievement in sustainable energy and campus resilience.

Powering the Future: Gallaudet University’s Microgrid Project

Located on the historic campus of Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., the project involved the installation of nearly 3,500 solar panels across seven university buildings. These panels are set to generate enough clean electricity to power approximately 400 homes in the D.C. area, providing a substantial contribution to reducing the university’s carbon footprint.

Beyond solar energy, the project includes the design and implementation of an 8.2 MW campus microgrid and district energy system. This system features a combination of steam, chilled water, and electrical generation through cutting-edge technologies such as reciprocating engines, solar photovoltaic systems, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and significant upgrades to the electrical infrastructure.

Impact and Innovation: A Step Toward Sustainability

The success of the Gallaudet University Microgrid Project is a testament to CHA’s expertise and dedication to sustainable energy solutions. As the owner’s engineer, CHA conducted a comprehensive evaluation and feasibility study, setting the stage for a robust, energy-efficient system. Their role in designing and implementing this microgrid system has not only enhanced the university’s energy independence but has also created a more resilient campus capable of withstanding power disruptions.

The project will significantly reduce energy costs for Gallaudet University while also opening up new opportunities for revenue generation through the sale of excess energy. It is a model for how educational institutions can lead the way in adopting green technologies and improving campus sustainability.

Recognizing Excellence in Construction

The ABC Excellence in Construction Awards program is a leading industry competition that recognizes the nation’s most innovative and high-quality construction projects.
