Breaking New Ground: Unraveling Neurotropic Virus Infections in the Peripheral Nervous System

September 11 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Jonathan Joyce – In this session I will describe how my research shifted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, taking me into the BSL-3, to conduct research in response to the unfolding public health crisis . Our investigation into the ability of SARS-CoV-2 to infect the peripheral nervous system involved multiple multidisciplinary collaborations across campus utilizing multiple complementary assays and animal models. Our findings reveal that SARS-CoV-2 swiftly invades the nervous system following infection and may provide insight into COVID-19 neurological symptoms and sequelae.

Dr. Andrea Bertke – In this session I will describe how my lab researches viral infections of the nervous system that impact the public health including HSV-1, HSV-2, and SARS-CoV-2. This research involves multiple multidisciplinary collaborations with other labs across the Virginia Tech campus, other universities across the US, and various industry and pharmaceutical partners. Utilizing unique primary cell cultures, animal models, and molecular techniques we aim to pave the way for the development of innovative diagnostics, prophylactics, and therapeutics to detect and mitigate neurotropic virus infection of the nervous system. Ultimately, our efforts will contribute to safeguarding human neurological health and improving the management of neurotropic viral infections.
