The Collaborative Computing Solutions (CCS) department within the Division of IT at Virginia Tech is working to ensure that faculty, staff, and students at the university have access to robust tools and environments to empower innovation and collaboration at all levels. To support this mission, CCS is seeking a talented Microsoft Security Engineer to join our team.

CCS directly manages the following services for Virginia Tech
– University Email Services (Gmail and Exchange Online)
– VT Collaborative Software as a Services (SaaS) Environments (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and Slack)
– Cloud Accounts and Services (Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure)
– Secure Virtual Environments (Hyper V virtual machines)
– VT Active Directory Services

Responsibilities:
– Active Directory and Azure AD Auditing: Auditing of Active Directory and Azure Active Directory (Entra ID) as well as performing any needed security remediations to ensure support of best security practices.
– Development of Security SOPs: Assist in creating CCS Standard Operating Procedures for security related processes.
– Comprehensive System Security Audits: Conduct security audits across all systems within CCS boundaries, informing CCS management and execution of required security remediations to safeguard infrastructure.
– Cybersecurity Tools and Technology Support: Aid in designing and developing cybersecurity tools and technology. Assist in integrating new features into existing infrastructures while upholding the integrity and security of enterprise-wide systems.
– Deployment and Configuration Guidance: Provide expert advice and assistance in deploying and configuring collection services and tools to optimize security measures.
– Security Log Analysis: Regularly review and interpret security logs from various systems to preemptively address potential security issues.
– Maintaining Technical Knowledge: Keep abreast of IT development methodologies, architectural design, security best practices, and technical standards.
– Documentation and Knowledge Transfer: Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for all service responsibilities, ensuring effective knowledge transfer.
– Technical Insight for Training: Provide technical insights and contribute to the development of training materials and knowledge base articles related to CCS services.
– Technical Liaison Role: Act as a technical liaison in meetings with vendors, IT partners, and customers, ensuring clear communication and collaboration.
– Leadership in Service Enhancement: Offer leadership and expertise in planning future service enhancements and operational improvements.
– Sprint Goal Management: Manage the implementation and monitoring of assigned sprint goals in alignment with project timelines and objectives.
– Policy Adherence: Adhere to all established university and departmental policies and procedures.
– Team Collaboration: Actively participate in team discussions and strategic planning sessions, contributing valuable insights and ideas.
– Professional Development: Work with the manager to identify and pursue professional development goals, enhancing skill sets and knowledge.

Required Qualifications

– Master’s degree in computer science, information systems, IT-related field, or a combination of education, training, and/or work experience equivalent to a Master’s degree
– Experience in handling sensitive data and performing confidential administrative actions
– Experience in providing security guidance or training to both technical personnel and end-users
– Experience with PowerShell and other automation scripting technologies
– Ability to exercise sound judgement and critical thinking
– Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication and collaboration skills
– Experience in preparing reports/documents and presenting information
– Ability to work independently and as part of a team
– Significant Microsoft Security Experience (5+ years in a security role) specifically as it relates to Active Directory and Azure Active Directory Security
– Microsoft Certified: Identity and Access Administrator Associate Certification or similar such as CompTIA Security+, CEH, GIAC Security Essentials, Microsoft Security Operations Analyst Associate
– Practical hands on experience performing Microsoft Cyber Security Audits/Remediations and Recommendations
– Committed to supporting and promoting a diverse and inclusive campus community.

Preferred Qualifications

– Master’s degree in computer science, information systems, IT-related field
– Microsoft Cybersecurity Architect Certification or similar such as CISSP, CCSP, OSCP, CompTIA CASP+
– Experience with architecture of Active Directory configuration with a background in support of a stable, secure and scalable solution.
