Job Description

Virginia Tech is seeking an innovative and experienced leader to serve as Director of Finance and Business Operations for its Division of Information Technology. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Director of Finance and Business Operations is part of the Office of the CIO which supports operations across the Division of Information Technology. The Director serves as the fiscal officer and leads the financial planning and business operations of the division.

Financial Planning: The Director provides counsel to the division’s senior leadership team through interpretation of actual financial data, development of in-year and future budget projections, and the analysis of actual financial activity and trends. The Director reviews department organizational structures in terms of budget alignment and workflow and makes recommendations to align expenditures appropriately to track budgets at the department/initiative level. The Director will be responsible for informing senior leadership about financial challenges, opportunities, and positioning within the university’s budget process.

Business Operations: The Director provides oversight of the Student Software Sales auxiliary and self-supporting Departmental Software Sales unit and provides counsel to the Telecommunications auxiliary. The Director establishes controls to ensure that all divisional financial obligations with vendors are met and that maintenance and software renewals are addressed.

Leadership and Supervision: The Director coaches, mentors and develops staff, clearly setting expectations for each position; recommends optimal organization and resource requirements to meet departmental goals; models and instills in all staff an exemplary customer service ethic and build cohesiveness as a team; develops training plans to meet new demands for the financial team; develops and maintains a positive and safe working environment in which open communication is fostered and employees demonstrate respect for each other.

This role will support the redesign of existing processes, including budget and financial models, across the division and evaluate opportunities to improve service delivery models as part of IT Transformation. This position requires a detailed-oriented professional with exceptional judgment and discretion, clear and concise communication skills, and deep analytical abilities.

Required Qualifications

– A master’s degree in business administration, finance, accounting, or related field; or a bachelor’s degree with an equivalent level of training/experience.
– Considerable knowledge of budgeting and planning in a nonprofit environment
– Demonstrated ability to effectively organize, perform and supervise a large volume of varied management tasks
– Detailed-oriented with exceptional judgment and discretion, clear and concise communication skills, and deep analytical abilities.
– Considerable experience in fund accounting and managing organizational expenditures within budget constraints.

Preferred Qualifications

– Experience working with fiscal operations in a large university environment
– Experience managing university auxiliary enterprises and self-supporting units
– Experience working with Information Technology services
